Rate of Airport Transit Visa applications every year lower

German and French Airports remain international travelers’ favorite for transit from one country to another, statistics on Airport Transit Visa published by the Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission show.

According to the statistics, German embassies around the world have received 1,967 visa applications within 2017, while French embassies have received another 1,723 applications. Next in the list is the Netherlands, which received almost thrice less visa applications than France and Germany, followed by Spain with almost half of it with 380 visa applications received.

On the other hand, after Italy, which received 61 visa applications, every other country received less than 50.

The following Schengen countries received no Airport Transit Visa applications in 2017:

  • Estonia
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Malta
  • Norway
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia

The statistics of the few past years show that the rate of Airport Transit Visa applications is continuing to decrease. While in 2015 there were 8,146 Airport Transit Visa Applications received in total by the Schengen countries, in 2016 the number fell to 7,255, and in 2017 the number slightly decreased again to 5,026.

And while Germany received 1,967 applications for this type of visa in 2017, during the two previous years it received more than two thousand applications, respectively 2,854 in 2015, and 2,289 in 2016.

On the other hand France had received 3,454 in 2015, and 3,364 in 2016 which is almost twice as much as in 2017 during both years.

The number of applications for transit in other countries, has slightly dropped too. While Belgium had 181 applications in 2015, in 2017 the number dropped to 45. The same happened with Italy, the consulates of which received only 62 Airport Transit visa applications in 2017, which is around 2.5 times less than in 2015 when the total number of applications received by the Italian consulates was 158.
