In cooperation with the airport IT supplier, both companies will equip Lithuania with more than 70 self-service entry and exit system kiosks and more than 30 automated border crossing lanes at main checkpoints for land-sea air border crossings, SchengenVisaInfo reports.

According to Lithuanian authorities, the kiosks are installed with facial recognition as well as fingerprint biometrics for immigration pre-screening as well as analysis of passengers registered at the country’s borders.

In addition, the lanes can read and authenticate travel documents, verify passenger identities, detect fraud, confirm passenger eligibility, and authorise the entry and exit system.

Such a move from authorities in Lithuania comes after the EU mandated that Schengen Zone countries must have a biometric Entry and Exit System (EES) in order to register citizens from countries outside the European Union passing through their territory by September 2022.

Besides Lithuania, Iceland and Denmark have also chosen IDEMIA for their entry and exit system.

Previously, the Danish National Police, Rigspolitiet, awarded the technology company IDEMIA with a ten-year contract plan in order to better manage the situation at the country’s borders.

Based on a press release published by IDEMIA, Rigspolitiet decided to take the opportunity provided by the EU Entry/Exit System system’s introduction in order to replace its current border management solution after the implementation of the new EES regulations is planned to take place this year.

“After Iceland, Denmark is the second European country that has chosen to collaborate with IDEMIA to implement a complete and highly secure solution that optimises the traveller flow,” IDEMIA Senior Vice President Europe, Public Security & Identity Pascal Fallet pointed out in this regard back then.

In order to provide the Danish National Police with an effective solution, IDEMIA partnered with two companies in Denmark – Systematic as well as  Biometric Solutions.

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which was previously announced that it would become effective by May 2022, aims to help the bloc’s countries to register each entry and exit and also replace the current use of passport stamping.

In this regard, recently, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) stressed that it is ready to support the EU countries with the implementation of the new system.
