EU Commission Confirms: Britons Will Need to Apply for ETIAS for Traveling to EU after Brexit

Britons Will Need to Apply for ETIAS for Traveling to EU after BrexitBritons will fall under the EU’s list of third countries, after Brexit finally takes place. Less than four months away from the date this happens, the European Commission has given its final confirmation that UK nationals will need to pay to enter the EU countries for short-stay visits.

Natasha Bertaud, the Coordinating Spokesperson for Activities of the EU President Jean-Claude Juncker confirmed the speculations, which have been going on ever since the Brexit referendum took place in June 23, 2016.  Britons will need to obtain an ETIAS before traveling to any of the EU member countries.

Yes #ETIAS will apply to the #UK as 3rd country post-Brexit – 7 euros for a 3 year pre-travel authorization. Simple form, like #ESTA to the US, but way cheaper,” Spokesperson Bertaud wrote on Twitter.

The statement was then retweeted by the Official EU Commission account in Twitter, leaving no space for further speculations.

The ETIAS is a European electronic system established under the purpose of keeping track of visitors from countries who do not need a short-stay visa to enter the Schengen Zone. It stands for the European Travel Information and Authorization System and is expected to be in place by January 1, 2021. Travelers in need of an ETIAS will have to apply electronically and pay a fee of 7€.

Despite of the EC’s confirmation, it is still unknown what will happen between March 29, 2019 and January 1, 2021. If the EU decides to apply to UK nationals the same norms that are applied to the rest of visa-exempt third-country nationals, then Britons will be able to keep traveling visa-free until the ETIAS becomes operational.

On the other hand, this means that UK nationals will most probably have to follow the same path as the rest of third world citizens when it comes to visiting the EU for stays longer than three months.
