Demand for Schengen Visas in China and India Steadily Increasing

In China, since 2014, the number of applications has grown for 56.5% reaching 2,818,974 in 2018.

Yet, despite the high number of applications, Chinese nationals and residents face more limitations and rejection when applying for a Schengen visa, compared to Russia. In 2018, statistics reveal that China had a 3.7% rejection rate, while only 34.1% of the approved applications were granted with multiple-entry visas.

Busiest Chinese consulates in 2018 were the Swiss consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, which processed over 800 thousand applications together.

Applications Lodged in India Surpass the 1-million-mark

The country with world’s second largest population is listed is the third largest source for Schengen visa applications. 1,081,359 applications were filed in India for a short-stay visa to the Schengen Area in 2018, 100,992 of which were rejected.

Unlike China, a majority of applicants in India were granted with a multiple entry visa to the Schengen member states, or 60.9% of the total visas issued in this country.

The Swiss consulate in New Delhi received 161,403 applications, topping the list as the busiest Schengen consulate in India. Next are listed the French consulate in New Delhi and Mumbai which received over 140 thousand applications together.

India has replaced Turkey, which has been listed third for years now. The transcontinental country is lagging behind with only 879,238 applications filed in 2018, with no important increase or decrease in the last five years. Its rejection rate has however increased, from 6.50% in 2017 to 8.5% in 2018. The share of multiple-entry visas has however declined from 73.71% to 67.2%.

Algeria, listed fifth with 710,644 applications is one of the countries with the highest rejection rates. 45.5% applications filed at the Schengen countries in 2018 were turned down. France remains top favorite for Algerians, with 544,585 of the overall applications in Algeria filed at the two French consulates in Algiers and the one in Annaba.
