40% of Denied Schengen Visa Applications of Turkish Applicants in 2022 Were Rejected by German Embassy, Data Show

Out of 120,876 visa applications filed by Turkish applicants at Ankara, Edirne, Istanbul and Izmir consulates in 2022, 39.7 per cent or 48,040 applications, were rejected by German authorities, making Germany the leading country to deny most visa applications from Türkiye.

According to Schengen Statistics, the total number of visa applications filed by Turks reached 223,699, with 174,929 applications being approved, while the share of multiple entry visas reached 78.2 per cent.

This means that 504,220 multiple-entry visas were issued to Turks in 2022, 173,980 of which were issued by German authorities, accounting for 34.5 per cent of all MEVs issued, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The list of four main countries to receive the most visa applications by Turkish citizens, and consequently, deny the most applications is concluded with Greece, France and the Netherlands. More specifically, Greece is the second country to have received the most visa applications by this nationality – a total of 164,829, while it disapproved 15,913 applications.

France and the Netherlands follow next with a total of 115,114 and 48,807 visa applications received, respectively, while authorities of the respective countries denied 15,435 and 15,913 Turkish applications for a Schengen Visa, respectively.

As per denied applications, France and the Netherlands refused 15,435 and 9,714 of those, respectively, taking the total rejection rate to 21.4 and 19.9 per cent, respectively. On the other hand, Greece had the lowest rejection rate out of all of these four countries as 9.6 per cent of all applications from Turkish applicants ended up being refused.

Denied visa applications filed by Turkish nationals accounted for 21.4 per cent of total applications made. The rejection rate by French and Dutch authorities, on the other hand, was slightly lower – 13.4 and 19.9 per cent, respectively.

However, the share of MEVs issued to Turkish nationals varied between these countries with Germany having the lowest rate – 78.2 per cent while Greece issued the most MEVs for Turks, in proportion with the number of applicants – 89.8 per cent. The share of MEVs issued to Turkish citizens in France is 81.5 per cent and 78.6 per cent for the Netherlands.

Turkish nationals have become the nationality that filed the visa applications for Schengen visas in 2022, filing 778,409 applications, while according to Schengen Statistics for 2021, Turkish nationals were listed as the second nationality with the most visa applications filed, with 271,977 visa applications submitted, only falling behind Russians with 536,241 applications.
